How to Buy a Stroller
Strollers will last at least two years of a child’s life and possibly longer, depending on your lifestyle and the determination of your child to remain seated as you shop, walk and move about. Getting one that will last and do what you need it to can sometimes be difficult amidst the hype and labels attached to so many strollers nowadays. Here are some tips to help you wade through the frills and to find the practical things that will really matter when you are pushing it up and down those hilly, bumpy, or crowded streets!
Steps
- Go for strength and stability. A good stroller will be strong. Whilst light ones may be cheaper, they will not last as long and they tend to be lower, of poor quality and lacking in some features that will make your life easier, such as a carrying basket and easy-to-use restraints. When you are testing your stroller, make sure that it feels stable under your hands. Give it a few whirls around the shop floor, especially around corners to see how it copes. It helps to put a weight in it, such as a bag or something off a nearby shelf, to reproduce the condition of having an infant seated in it.
- Note the difference between three wheelers and four wheelers. Three wheelers (baby buggies) offer manoeuvrability at the expense of less stability. The choice is dependent on your activities and wishes.
- Open and close the stroller. A good stroller should be able to be opened with one hand and a foot. This enables you to keep one hand free to hold baby as needed. A stroller that is difficult to open in this manner is best left on the shelf. At the same time, check the latch on the stroller to make sure that it is sturdy - some strollers have collapsed when this latch comes undone.[1]
- Look for a full length bar. Steering is much easier with a full length bar across the top than with two handles. If you can get one with a single bar, prefer it over others. If not, look for a stroller with very strong handles that are at your normal standing height to hold. In both cases, adjustable handles are always the best option.
- Select adjustable wheel options if needed. Being able to adjust the wheels can be a back saver; look for a stroller that has wheels which can be adjusted for more difficult terrain or for tight spaces. Swivel front wheels can make it easier to move around and the ability to lock the wheels straight ahead is useful for rough terrain or for high speeds (such as jogging).
- Look at the baby’s comfort and safety options. There are several things to look for in a good stroller:
- Padding.You will be able to tell the difference between a well-padded, strong seat area and a flimsy one. Always prefer a more comfortable seat as this will help your baby sleep and can encourage a restless toddler to stay seated during a longer shopping trip.
- Backrest. An adjustable backrest that allows the stroller to sit flat is a definite bonus when your child falls asleep.
- Footrest. This is important as it prevents your larger child from dragging her feet or getting them caught in a wheel.
- Bumper bar. The bumper bar provides your baby with something to hold onto; good ones can be removed when you take baby out.
- Test suspension and brakes. Just as with a car, the supension and the brakes make for a smoother, more controlled and safer ride. Good suspension will ensure a smoother ride and the brakes should be able to stop the stroller quickly. The best brakes are those that can control all of the wheels at once from a single bar; other strollers have individual wheel breaks and these are harder to use. Check out these features as you test the stroller.
- Look for shelter options. A stroller should have decent shelter options to protect baby from the sun and inclement weather. Some strollers have a wide brim, others even have a plastic waterproof feature that can be rolled down during rain.
- Check for carrying capacity. A good stroller will have room for shopping, spare clothes, baby food etc.
- Check it can be carried by you and that it fits. Nothing worse than a stroller that you cannot lift and cannot fit into the back of the car! Always know this in advance.
Tips
- It can be easier testing strollers in larger stores where there is space; however, you are more likely to get good one-on-one advice in smaller stores where they specialize only in infant equipment. Another great way to test strollers is to borrow those of your friends for a test drive.
- Test a stroller on stairs. You will be in the position at some time during ownership of a stroller where you will be confronted by stairs. You might as well know in advance that the stroller is up to the challenge.

- Don’t neglect secondhand and consignment stores; they can be ideal sources of well maintained, used strollers and you will save money.
- Rain covers are generally sold separately from the stroller itself. Check that it fits your stroller before purchasing.

Prefer the version without the shield. by Misskatie 
This version of this seat is much more dangerous than the version with a simple five point harness. The overhead shield that comes down over the child’s head onto their lap is actually more dangerous than it is protective - especially rear facing. In an accident a child’s face can actually come into contact with the shield causing injury. You would be better off buying the version with a simple five point harness… even though it might not be as good for getting your kid to keep their shoes on!

This is a nice car seat, and ower son loves it. He likes to hit his hands off the cross bar on it. Which keeps his very busy on the road. So it is great and very easy to use.

I love just dropping the arms and the harness comes down over baby and locks into place. He is buckled in just as good as he is in any car seat, with the straps over both shoulders and between his legs and the locking device that you slide up to about arm pit height. It holds him in place and is comfortable. Then he has the padded area around him to protect him form anything coming at him in a car crash, as well as a place to attach toys. I like it so much better than the car seats without the pull down arm and padding in front. Otherwise, it’s just like any other car seat, with all the seat padding, head rest and such. The one I have is several years old, I got it for my first grandson nearly 5 years ago and it’s in perfect condition. I’d love to get a new one for my new grandson (with the few updated changes) but can’t justify spending the money when this one is in such good condition.

My 2 year old loves to unbuckle and unbutton a regular 5point harness she could unbuckle and climb out of I bought this car seat and shes forever stuck!! I love it I don’t have to worry about pulling over every 5min to buckle her back in and try to explain to her that she needs to stay in her seat and stay buckled. So if you have a difficult 2 year old that can get out of thier car seat this seat is for you. I love it

We received this when our son was about 1 month old. He is rarely in the car, so I used the velcro strap to hang it by the changing table to keep him occupied. He loved it so much that I began setting it up on the floor for him for his daily tummy time. The black and white cards were the first time I could really see him focusing on anything except people’s faces. He will look at the cards for an extended period of time and not lose interest. I would recommend this product to anyone. It has become my number one item to give to parents of newborns.

My son likes to look at the pictures, but only for a few seconds. he still hates the car! The product does seem durable and nice and colorful, but he really hates the car. Giving him a small yot ro chew on seems to help a bit more.

My baby started screaming in the car at 2 months, and I have done or bought everything I could find to help him. Although this gallery doesn’t work for my son as intended (hung over a seat’s headrest to allow him to independently stare at the pictures), it does help to distract him when someone in the backseat holds up a card at a time for him to view. He spends anywhere from 1 to 10 minutes taking in each picture, and it definitely helps to keep him calm when a meltdown is on the way. I believe that the single card held close to his face (as opposed to four cards a foot and a half away) better gets his attention and helps him focus. It has been a helpful product for us, just not the miracle product I was hoping for.

Our baby has loved looking at this since she was only a month old. It’s deceptively simple, but a fantastic toy for the car and really keeps her entertained. I feel better that she’s getting some stimulus during car trips as well. Highly recommended.

I am so glad that I purchased this item. It’s great to be able to see my daughter while we’re in the car. When she was a newborn, I wasn’t used to all her sounds she made- and this was so great to be able to see if there was something wrong with her or not. Plus, she loves to look at the friendly monkey

This is absolutely he best mirror I have found for our van. I had tried four of the rain forest deluxe mirrors with nothing but problems. This is much cheaper, easier to use, and Rome loves talking to the monkey. The mirror is nice, big, and round making it very easy to see in the rear-view without taking up too much space and blocking your view.

I got this before my daughter was born. She’s now 10 months and it’s still going strong. It took some tinkering to get it strapped around the headrest right, and tight enough, to prevent the slipping problem another reviewer mentioned, but since re-adjusting it the last time, it hasn’t moved a millimeter. I love that I can see so much of my daughter, and the rounded surface means that even if the mirror does slip, you can still see your child without having to pull over and adjust. Overall, an essential buy for new parents!

My daughter is almost 3 months old and she loves this mirror. It makes traveling easier. She just sits in her car sit and talks to the other “baby”and monkey friend in the car. It was super easy to put in the car too. I only wish the the mirror was bigger so I can see her better.

Nice bag for the money by Lulu Belle
The bag fits the car seat nicely, only wished it had some shoulder pads for easier travel… A little on the thin side, but for the money it is OK.
Better than nothing, but not great for air travel by James Huff 
This bag has decent construction and fits the booster seat well, but that’s about it. For air travel, it’s better than nothing, but also has some disadvantages. It doesn’t do anything more than cover the seat–there’s no foam padding or anything like that to provide extra protection for the seat against damage caused in baggage handling. (But what do you expect for around $20, I guess?) More importantly, the strap is not removable, and there’s no way to secure it to the bag so that it doesn’t flap around. This greatly increases the chance of the bag (and seat inside) getting lost, damaged, or delayed during airport baggage handling, as loose straps can get caught in the automatic baggage handling machinery. Be sure to identify the bag as containing a car seat when checking in at the airport, as most major airlines will have a separate handling procedure for car seats that might spare you the inconvenience of a damaged/lost bag and seat.

Just received the bag. The material seems very strong. A reviewer on another site mentioned that the only thing missing is a cushioned shoulder strap, so what I plan to do is use the removable velcro cushions that came with my daughter’s infant carseat and put them on the straps so that my shoulders won’t hurt. Haven’t used it yet but plan to take it on a plane real soon, I’m just happy that the booster seat is so awesome and that it folds.
Update: didn’t need the cushions because it’s pretty light anyway. carseat fits well, it protects the seat well when you check it at the airport.

Great concept, poor performance! by E. A. Donovan
This is our first baby and I researched everything we even considered buying. I tend to take negative reviews with a grain of salt and was excited about this product. We just received this swing frame as a gift and I put it together right away and tried it out. We have a Graco Snugride carseat and my 7 week old baby is 11 lbs. This product folds up well for travel, which is one of the main reasons we registered for it. The vibration (2 settings) and music/nature sounds work well. You can adjust the speed which is nice. The problem with it is the motor simply cannot keep up. You can hear and see the problem. The motor works hard to keep up and the swing would go faster at times then slow way down - which startled my sleeping baby. It actually kept a more consistent pace before I put the batteries in and just pushed the seat with my son in it. If Graco put a more appropriate sized motor in it, I would definitely recommend this product. Until then, mine is getting returned.

Having already had a small, cute Pooh travel swing for my first daughter that was a PIECE OF JUNK; I took a chance and ordered this frame for my second daughter.
I was SUPER pleased with this product. My car seat fits right in it no problem (Graco Snugride) and it looks cute. It is a piece of cake to use and the power is unbelievable.
I don’t have all the problems with the batteries that others do, though; because I use rechargeable batteries throughout my house. I have two sets for the swing and when one dies, I pop the other set in while I charge it up. Works great.

My little one will not stay in his car seat without crying unless there is movement. I really wanted to have a swing for him but due to limited space I thought that this was not possible. Then I saw this and since the car seat has to go somewhere this seemed the perfect place to put it. I found it very easy to assemble and love the fact it will collapse down and I can throw it in the car with everything else if I am going to see someone that doesn’t have a baby themselves. The motor is on the noisy side but that doesn’t seem to bother my little one. But this is the reason I only gave it four stars. I have to say that this is working for me so far. Today my Little One managed to stay in his car seat asleep for 45 minutes before waking after getting back in the house. So it has given me time to get things sorted after getting home before having to sort him out. Also I can get him ready before I go out and set the swing going without having to worry about him getting upset while I finish getting me ready. Also it does offer a very convenient place to store the car seat and the frame doesn’t take up to much room even when up and of course if I have the need for space I can just collapse it down and store it away. I would recommend this product for those who need a swing but have limited space or who need a swing that will transport without too much problem.

Love this gadget, so does my baby. Doesn’t take up much space, relative to other swings. I store the car seat on it when both items are not in use. Does make a clicking noise, but baby gets use to it, it becomes white noise to him after awhile. The only downside is that although there is a dial to set your speed, it will only work on the high setting. The weight of the baby at the lower setting will put the swing mechanism off track and would need to be reset. For the price and size, worth it and highly recommended.

I love this product, I like how my car seat is the swing.
It had a lot of pieces to put together but fairly easy. I like that it folds to save space, and makes it easy to travel.
Putting my baby in the swing was the first time I got him to sleep for more then 4 hours in the night. I still haven’t needed to change the batteries in the swinger, the bouncy part never worked on mine, and I’ve been to busy to get that fixed. But it’s a great option.

Good quality materials, nice pattern, cushy, latch very easy to install (though a little difficult to get out in my car). Also, very light, with convenient travel strap. On down side, pocket is under seat and is suitable only for storing the strap or documentation. Would have been nice to have side pockets for cups etc.
Easy to use, solid seat by Doting Father
Just moved our 4 year old from her car seat to a booster because she was over the weight limits of the seat and old enough to “be a big girl.” There are cheaper booster seats out there, but this is a very solid and comfortable seat, and one of only a few with the LATCH connectors. The connectors help keep the seat in the proper position and keep her from falling over while trying to buckle the belt around her. I would definitely recommend and I will buy another when our younger child is old enough.

My wife was so excited to discover a booster with the LATCH system. Our 5 year old daughter loves it, says it’s more comfortable then her other booster and couldn’t wait to test it out. It sits her up higher than other seats so the seatbelt hits at a better spot AND she has a better view. It’s definately pricey but considering she’ll be in this seat for years to come, it’s worth every penney! I’ll definately buy another when my younger child is ready for a booster too.

After hours and hours of research we decided to replace our daughters Graco booster with this product, and couldn’t be more pleased. It is the best built booster I’ve ever seen and is comprised of high quality materials. The Latch system is a huge plus and is easy to operate. And on top of all that, my daughter loves the seat and finds it very comfortable. Highly recommended.

Although a bit more expensive than other booster seats I’ve purchased, it’s worth every dollar. I purchased the cheetah look for my daughter as well and both my kids LOVE these seats. Our family drove 12+ hours (split over two days) and back earlier this month and my kids never complained about leg pains or discomforts. I highly recommend this seat!
